Pick your state to calculate your take-home pay

How take-home pay is worked out

  1. Gross pay = hourly rate × hours per week × 52, split across your paychecks.
  2. Pre-tax deductions like 401(k) and health insurance come out first.
  3. Federal income tax uses this year's brackets after the standard deduction.
  4. FICA: Social Security 6.2% (up to the wage base) and Medicare 1.45%, plus 0.9% on very high pay.
  5. State taxes — none, flat or progressive, plus any state disability or paid-leave premiums.

Worked example

$25/hour × 40 hours = $52,000 a year, single, paid biweekly, in a no-tax state:

  • Federal taxable = 52,000 − 16,100 = 35,900 → $4,060 tax
  • Social Security = 52,000 × 6.2% = $3,224
  • Medicare = 52,000 × 1.45% = $754
  • Take-home ≈ $43,962 a year, or about $1,690.85 per paycheck
