New York tax notes
New York State brackets run from 4% to 10.9%. Workers pay small amounts for disability (SDI) and Paid Family Leave. New York City and Yonkers residents pay extra local tax, not included here.
How your New York paycheck is calculated
- Gross pay = hourly rate × hours per week × 52, divided by your number of paychecks.
- Pre-tax deductions (401(k) and health insurance) are taken out before income tax. Health insurance also lowers Social Security and Medicare.
- Federal income tax uses the current brackets after the standard deduction for your filing status.
- Social Security (6.2% up to the wage base) and Medicare (1.45%, plus 0.9% on high earnings).
- New York taxes — see the state notes above.
Tips to boost your take-home pay
- Contributing to a 401(k) lowers your taxable income today.
- Check your W-4 once a year so you're not giving the government an interest-free loan.
- Health, dental and FSA/HSA contributions through work are usually pre-tax.
