Bumping your 401(k) by 1% often costs less than 1% of your take-home — taxes shrink too!

California tax notes

California has the nation's highest top rate: brackets from 1% to 12.3%, plus a 1% mental health surcharge on income over $1 million. Workers also pay State Disability Insurance (SDI) on all wages — no cap.

How your California paycheck is calculated

  1. Gross pay = hourly rate × hours per week × 52, divided by your number of paychecks.
  2. Pre-tax deductions (401(k) and health insurance) are taken out before income tax. Health insurance also lowers Social Security and Medicare.
  3. Federal income tax uses the current brackets after the standard deduction for your filing status.
  4. Social Security (6.2% up to the wage base) and Medicare (1.45%, plus 0.9% on high earnings).
  5. California taxes — see the state notes above.

Tips to boost your take-home pay

  • Contributing to a 401(k) lowers your taxable income today.
  • Check your W-4 once a year so you're not giving the government an interest-free loan.
  • Health, dental and FSA/HSA contributions through work are usually pre-tax.
