Oregon tax notes

Oregon has high rates: 4.75% to 9.9%. Workers also pay Paid Leave Oregon and the 0.1% statewide transit tax. Some Portland-area residents owe extra local taxes.

How your Oregon paycheck is calculated

  1. Gross pay = hourly rate × hours per week × 52, divided by your number of paychecks.
  2. Pre-tax deductions (401(k) and health insurance) are taken out before income tax. Health insurance also lowers Social Security and Medicare.
  3. Federal income tax uses the current brackets after the standard deduction for your filing status.
  4. Social Security (6.2% up to the wage base) and Medicare (1.45%, plus 0.9% on high earnings).
  5. Oregon taxes — see the state notes above.

Tips to boost your take-home pay

  • Contributing to a 401(k) lowers your taxable income today.
  • Check your W-4 once a year so you're not giving the government an interest-free loan.
  • Health, dental and FSA/HSA contributions through work are usually pre-tax.
