Bumping your 401(k) by 1% often costs less than 1% of your take-home — taxes shrink too!

Pennsylvania tax notes

Pennsylvania has a flat 3.07% tax with no standard deduction, and 401(k) contributions are still taxed by PA (this estimate subtracts them, so it may run slightly low). Nearly every municipality charges a local earned income tax.

How your Pennsylvania paycheck is calculated

  1. Gross pay = hourly rate × hours per week × 52, divided by your number of paychecks.
  2. Pre-tax deductions (401(k) and health insurance) are taken out before income tax. Health insurance also lowers Social Security and Medicare.
  3. Federal income tax uses the current brackets after the standard deduction for your filing status.
  4. Social Security (6.2% up to the wage base) and Medicare (1.45%, plus 0.9% on high earnings).
  5. Pennsylvania taxes — see the state notes above.

Tips to boost your take-home pay

  • Contributing to a 401(k) lowers your taxable income today.
  • Check your W-4 once a year so you're not giving the government an interest-free loan.
  • Health, dental and FSA/HSA contributions through work are usually pre-tax.
