New Jersey tax notes
New Jersey uses brackets from 1.4% to 10.75%. Workers also pay disability (TDI), family leave (FLI) and unemployment contributions, all included.
How your New Jersey paycheck is calculated
- Gross pay = hourly rate × hours per week × 52, divided by your number of paychecks.
- Pre-tax deductions (401(k) and health insurance) are taken out before income tax. Health insurance also lowers Social Security and Medicare.
- Federal income tax uses the current brackets after the standard deduction for your filing status.
- Social Security (6.2% up to the wage base) and Medicare (1.45%, plus 0.9% on high earnings).
- New Jersey taxes — see the state notes above.
Tips to boost your take-home pay
- Contributing to a 401(k) lowers your taxable income today.
- Check your W-4 once a year so you're not giving the government an interest-free loan.
- Health, dental and FSA/HSA contributions through work are usually pre-tax.
