Damp sand packs and weighs more than dry. For paver bases, plan about 1 inch of sand over compacted gravel.

How it works

Volume = length × width × depth (in feet), plus waste. Cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27. Tons = cubic yards × sand density (about 1.3–1.4 tons per cubic yard, depending on type). Bags = total pounds ÷ 50.

Worked example

A 10 × 10 ft area, 2 inches deep, with 10% waste = 18.3 cu ft = 0.68 cubic yards. Fill sand at 1.35 tons per yard weighs 0.92 tons, or 37 bags of 50 lb.
