Use 4 in of gravel for walkways and 6 in for patios on clay soil or anything you'll drive on. Compact it in 2 in layers.
How it works
Pavers = patio area ÷ ((paver length + joint) × (paver width + joint)) + waste. Under the pavers you need a compacted gravel base 4–6 in deep and 1 in of bedding sand: volume = area × depth ÷ 12 ÷ 27 cubic yards. Polymeric sand covers about 75 sq ft per 50 lb bag.
Worked example
A 12 × 10 ft patio with 8 × 4 in pavers and ⅛ in joints:
- Each paver covers 8.125 × 4.125 ÷ 144 = 0.233 sq ft
- 120 ÷ 0.233 = 516, plus 10% = 568 pavers
- 6 in base: 120 × 6 ÷ 12 ÷ 27 = 2.22 cu yd of gravel
- 1 in sand: 0.37 cu yd, plus 2 bags of polymeric sand
