  • Polymeric sand (50 lb bags)5 bags

Wide joints and small pavers drink far more sand — check the coverage chart on your bag and adjust the volume per bag if needed.

How it works

Joint length per sq ft = 144 × (1 ÷ (paver length + joint) + 1 ÷ (paver width + joint)) inches. Joint volume = joint length × joint width × joint depth. Bags = total volume (plus waste) ÷ volume per bag (about 0.5 cu ft for a 50 lb bag, editable).

Worked example

200 sq ft of 4 × 8 in pavers with ¼ in joints, 1½ in deep: about 19.3 cu in per sq ft, 2.45 cu ft with 10% waste, so 5 bags. Each bag covers about 45 sq ft with these joints.
