How it works

Tons = cubic yards × material density (tons per cubic yard). Pounds = tons × 2,000. To go back, yards = tons ÷ density.

Typical densities: gravel 1.4, crushed stone 1.35, sand 1.35, topsoil 1.1, mulch 0.4, river rock 1.35, asphalt 2.0, concrete 2.0 tons per cubic yard.

Worked example

10 cubic yards of gravel × 1.4 tons per yard = 14 tons, or 28,000 lb.

Questions people ask

Rock is dense; mulch is mostly air. Moisture also adds weight.
