Bulk gravel is usually cheaper once you need more than about 1 cubic yard. Most suppliers deliver in half-yard steps.
How it works
Cubic yards = length × width × depth (in) ÷ 12 ÷ 27, plus waste. Tons = cubic yards × density. We use about 1.4 tons per yard for pea gravel, 1.5 for crushed stone and 1.35 for river rock. Bags hold 0.5 cu ft.
Worked example
A 10 × 10 ft area, 3 in deep, pea gravel:
- 100 × 3 ÷ 12 = 25 cu ft, plus 10% = 27.5 cu ft
- 27.5 ÷ 27 = 1.02 cubic yards
- 1.02 × 1.4 = 1.43 tons, or 55 bags
