Carpet comes off a roll 12 or 15 ft wide, so you pay for the leftover strip. Rooms close to the roll width waste the least.
How it works
Carpet comes on 12 or 15 ft rolls. For each room we lay the roll the way that wastes least: carpet = strips × roll width × room length. Pad covers the actual floor area. Both include waste. Square yards = sq ft ÷ 9.
Worked example
A 14 × 12 ft room with a 12 ft roll:
- One 12 ft wide strip, 14 ft long = 168 sq ft
- 168 + 10% = 184.8 ÷ 9 = 21 sq yd of carpet
- 21 sq yd of pad and 52 ft of tack strip
