How it works
- Area of each room = length × width
- Total area = add every room together
- With waste = total area × (1 + waste % ÷ 100)
- Boxes = area with waste ÷ box coverage, rounded up
Worked example
A 12 × 10 ft bedroom (120 sq ft) plus a 6 × 5 ft closet (30 sq ft) = 150 sq ft. With 10% waste that's 165 sq ft. Boxes cover 20 sq ft, so 165 ÷ 20 = 8.25 → 9 boxes.
Tips for choosing a waste factor
- 5–10% for simple rectangular rooms with straight-lay planks
- 10–15% for lots of corners, closets or doorways
- 15–20% for diagonal or herringbone patterns
Questions people ask
10% is a safe default for most rooms. Use 15% for rooms with lots of angles and up to 20% for diagonal or herringbone layouts.
