🧶Rug Size Calculator
Pick your room and layout to see which standard rug size fits best — with a quick top-down sketch.
Your room
Best standard rug
8′ × 10′
Also works: 6′ × 9′
room
14.0′ × 12.0′
recommended
8′ × 10′
alternative
6′ × 9′
Aim for 12–18 inches of bare floor between the rug and the walls.
How it works
- Living room & bedroom: leave about 18 inches of floor around the rug for an all-legs-on layout, or about 3 feet for a front-legs-on layout. We pick the largest standard size that fits.
- Dining room: the rug should extend about 24 inches past every table edge so pulled-out chairs stay on it. We pick the smallest standard size that does.
Standard sizes: 3×5, 4×6, 5×7, 5×8, 6×9, 8×10, 9×12, 10×14, 12×15 ft.
Worked example
A 14 × 12 ft living room, all legs on: 14 − 3 = 11 ft and 12 − 3 = 9 ft available → 9 × 12 is too long, so 8 × 10 is the best fit.
