Residential driveways are usually 2–3 inches of asphalt over 4–8 inches of compacted gravel base.
How it works
Volume = length × width × compacted thickness, plus waste. Tons = cubic feet × 145 lb ÷ 2,000 (145 lb per cubic foot is typical hot-mix asphalt, editable).
Worked example
A 40 × 12 ft driveway at 3 inches thick with 10% waste = 132 cu ft = 4.89 cubic yards, or about 9.57 tons.
