Topsoil settles as it's watered. Add about 10–20% extra if you're filling low spots or building up a new bed.
How it works
Cubic yards = length × width × depth (in) ÷ 12 ÷ 27, plus waste. Bags usually hold 0.75 cu ft.
Worked example
A 20 × 10 ft area, 4 in deep:
- 200 × 4 ÷ 12 = 66.7 cu ft, plus 10% = 73.3 cu ft
- 73.3 ÷ 27 = 2.72 cubic yards
- or 73.3 ÷ 0.75 = 98 bags
