How it works
- Resting energy (RER) = 70 × (weight in kg)^0.75
- Daily calories = RER × life-stage/activity factor
- Puppy under 4 months ×3, 4–12 months ×2
- Adult: low ×1.2, normal ×1.6, active ×2, working ×3
- Seniors use about 85% of the adult figure
- Cups per day = daily calories ÷ calories per cup
Worked example
A 40 lb (18.1 kg) adult dog with normal activity: RER = 70 × 18.1^0.75 ≈ 614 kcal. × 1.6 = 982 kcal/day. With 380 kcal/cup food → 2.6 cups a day, or 1.3 cups per meal twice daily.
