🍫Dog Chocolate Toxicity Calculator

Estimate how much theobromine your dog ate — and always call your vet or poison control, whatever the result.

What happened

Severity: None expected

8.5 mg theobromine per kg

Symptoms aren't typically expected at this dose — but dogs vary, and amounts are easy to underestimate. Call your vet anyway.

Have the wrapper handy when you call — the exact product and amount help your vet decide what to do. Symptoms can take 6–12 hours to appear.

How it works

Chocolate contains theobromine, which dogs process very slowly.

  • Dose (mg/kg) = ounces eaten × theobromine mg per ounce ÷ dog's weight in kg

Standard veterinary thresholds:

  • 20 mg/kg+: mild signs (vomiting, diarrhea, thirst, restlessness)
  • 40 mg/kg+: moderate (heart rhythm problems)
  • 60 mg/kg+: severe (tremors, seizures)

Worked example

A 30 lb (13.6 kg) dog eats 2 oz of baking chocolate (390 mg/oz):

  • 2 × 390 = 780 mg theobromine
  • 780 ÷ 13.6 = 57 mg/kg → moderate. Call the vet immediately.

Even a low number doesn't mean your dog is safe — labels vary, amounts get underestimated, and some dogs are more sensitive. Always call your vet or a poison control hotline.
