Exposure is the part you see once the boards overlap — usually about half an inch less than the board's width.

How it works

Area = width × height − openings. Linear feet = area × 12 ÷ exposure (the visible face), plus waste. Boards = linear feet ÷ board length, rounded up.

Worked example

A 12 × 8 ft wall minus 15 sq ft of window = 81 sq ft. With 5½ in exposure: 81 × 12 ÷ 5.5 × 1.1 = 194 linear feet, or 25 boards at 8 ft.
