Nail each board down its center and each batten through the gap, so the wood can swell and shrink without splitting.
How it works
Boards = wall width in inches ÷ board width. Battens = wall width ÷ batten spacing + 1. Linear feet = (boards + battens) × wall height. Nails assume one every 16 in, two rows per board and one per batten. Waste is added to boards and battens.
Worked example
A 12 × 8 ft wall with 7¼ in boards and battens every 16 in: 144 ÷ 7.25 × 1.1 = 22 boards and 10 × 1.1 = 11 battens, about 264 linear feet and 330 nails.
