A triangular grid fits about 15% more plants and fills in faster, with no straight rows showing.

How it works

Square grid: plants = area ÷ spacing². Triangular (staggered) grid: plants = area ÷ (spacing² × 0.866), which fits about 15% more plants.

Worked example

A 10 × 5 ft bed with plants every 12 inches: 50 sq ft ÷ 1 = 50 plants on a square grid, or about 58 plants on a triangular grid.
