Fridges and AC units cycle on and off, so real running time is often a third to half of the hours they're plugged in.
How it works
- kWh per day = watts × hours ÷ 1,000
- Cost per day = kWh × rate. Month = day × 30.42, year = day × 365.
Worked example
A 1,500 W space heater for 8 hours at $0.17/kWh:
- 1,500 × 8 ÷ 1,000 = 12 kWh/day
- 12 × 0.17 = $2.04 a day, about $62 a month and $745 a year
