MET values are averages. Fitness, terrain and effort change real burn by 10–20% either way — and fitness trackers often overestimate.

How it works

Every activity has a MET value — how hard it is compared with sitting still (1 MET).

Calories = MET × 3.5 × body weight (kg) ÷ 200 × minutes

Worked example

A 160 lb (72.6 kg) person running at 6 mph (MET 9.8) for 30 minutes:

  • 9.8 × 3.5 × 72.6 ÷ 200 = 12.4 calories a minute
  • × 30 minutes = about 373 calories

MET values come from the Compendium of Physical Activities and are averages — your real burn depends on fitness, effort and terrain.

Questions people ask

A metabolic equivalent: 1 MET is the energy you use sitting quietly. An activity with a MET of 8 burns about 8 times as much.
